Purpose Statement

May 3, 2024

Hello and welcome to another week at Humbly Courageous. I’m glad you stopped by!

Do you have a purpose statement for your life? I didn’t until a few years ago. I never really even thought much about it, but when I started writing I wanted to have a purpose for what I was doing. Something to always go back to when I was doubting my efforts, or wondering if I should continue. Some weeks I find myself wavering. Do I have anything left to say? Anything to offer? That’s when I can look back at my purpose statement and remember why I started writing in the first place.

Mine is…

You never know who you are encouraging. It can be fleeting, and it doesn’t have to be a long interaction to have a profound effect.

One example of a time when this happened to me is, several years ago, I ran into one of my middle school teachers at a church service. For whatever reason, I always felt that he didn’t like me much. He called out my name as we were walking in. I turned around and said hello. He told me that his wife had recently passed away and that somehow her battle made him think of the strength he saw in me. He said, “you are one in a million kiddo!” He told me he was so glad he had run into me, so that he could tell me that nearly 20 years later. I’ve never forgotten that conversation. I was a new mom at the time, and feeling kind of low. It was perfect timing.

Give someone a smile, say the encouraging words you are thinking about them. It could just be the very day they need to hear that exact thing you have to say.

I have found that by humbly courageously sharing my story and staying true to my purpose statement, I have been able to help others. Who knows, maybe my purpose statement will change someday, but for now this feels like exactly where I should be focusing my efforts. If you don’t have one, think about jotting one down today. 💚
