New York City Marathon 2021

Abbott World Marathon Major #2
We ran the New York City Marathon with our oldest son Luke. This made it an especially memorable marathon for us. Coming out of Covid, many restrictions were still in place such as capping the number of participants in half from 50,000 and wearing masks until the actual race started. New York is a tough course running through all 5 boroughs including Staton Island, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Manhattan. Jamie struggled this day due to the excess number of hills pushing the duo bike, but Luke was the guiding force to the finish line. Our youngest son Jack was there cheering us on as we finished. We ran the NYC Marathon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Team Momentum and raised nearly $22,000.

New York, New York - 50th Anniversary
The athletes with disabilities (AWD) were well taken care of at this event. For the duo teams, they brought our duo bike to an area separate from all the other 25,000 runners which allowed us the time and space to get ready for an event like this. When it came time to start, the AWD participants began right after the Wave 1 runners, however we hung back hoping to start with the Wave 2 runners because Luke was in that group. When the race coordinator saw we hadn’t started with the other AWD’s, he had us find Luke (which we somehow did) and he allowed the 3 of us to have our very own start ahead of the Wave 2 runners. It was surreal for just the 3 of us to begin a major marathon like this alone with the first mile uphill across the Verranzzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn. From there, the rest is history. (Finish time 3:26:47)

Race Highlights
NYC is a special place for our family. From our first anniversary to then sharing it with our sons, we have enjoyed exploring all this City has to offer from its busyness to the peacefulness of Central Park. Amy received the Citgo Fueling Good Award from our MDA Team Momentum which was special in itself. Even Jack got to run the NYC 5k. This race also had the support of our boys high school running coaches who ran around with Jack while we were racing. Thanks to coach Kenley and Dircksen for the love and support through the years to our family.
